So here’s a possible list of three choices to offer your fans with your next album:
The physical CD - Let’s say it features 15 songs and cool liner notes on the insert. Price: $15 - or more if you combine it with a DVD or some other type of upgraded packaging.
Three digital-only EPs that feature five tracks each. Price: $3.99 each. Take all 15 songs from the album and break them into five groups of complimentary tracks.
Digital download singles - Every track is also available for 99 cents each.

Text 30 Apr 3 notes Repost: Why Artists Should “Do a 180” on “360 Deals”

Why Artists Should “Do a 180” on “360 Deals”
by Bob Donnelly, Esq.
Lommen Abdo Cole King & Stageberg

A new type of record label contract has come to be known as a “360 deal” (as in “360 degrees in a circle”) since it seeks to make the label a participant in revenue streams from every quarter of an artist’s career. In his popular music industry blog, Bob Lefsetz wants to know why artists would consider such a contract. With typical humor, he writes: If you’re contemplating a major label deal and your success is not based on terrestrial radio play, and you don’t make pop music, YOU’RE A FUCKING IDIOT!

SONY blocks Beyonce’s videos on her official YouTube channel due to “copyright grounds.”   So…she’s pirating her own stuff?!  WTF??!
Boing Boing has the story, and every time I see some utterly dim move by the major labels it makes me a little less sad about the state of the music industry.  Maneuvers like this - preposterously antagonizing one of your top-selling artists - are what have sunk the majors in the last few decades.  The ostensible reason for this is “copyright” but the more dire reason seems to be that Sony wants to wring every last dollar from her fans by making them buy the videos.  A fair task, but why even set up an “official channel” for her on YouTube only to take the videos down?
This is dumbassery at its finest.
